The beginning of August is always an odd time to shop. It’s end of sale season, too early for the new a/w collections (if you’re someone who can do autumn shopping in high-summer) and the shops are full of badly crammed sales rails. All in all, there’s always a pretty poor selection of items to buy. Saying that, there’s always an exception to the rule and that is that the last week of the sales can be a brilliant time to pick up some bargains. Some of the real gems may have sold out, but you’d be surprised at how much good stuff is still out there if you look hard enough. From a gorgeous fringed basket to an investment leather jacket and the Isabel Marant knitwear I’ve been lusting after for months, here’s what I’ve found in my end-of-sale hunt…
Natasha and I both have a thing about woven baskets and this handmade straw one from Prymal is a real beaut. Buy now and use every summer for the foreseeable future. Now £31 And, if you love baskets, then you must check out how new online company Edit 58 where you can find gorgeous pom pom adorned baskets, rugs and wall-hangings…
The Investment Jacket
Leather jackets are a modern classic. So easy to wear and the perfect way to dress down an outfit or give something a little staid an edge. This piece from French brand IRO is beautiful and exactly the kind of thing you’d imagine a French Voguette wearing as she strutted around the September shows. At £294, it’s not cheap, but when you consider that it was originally priced at £1095, then it could definitely be described as a fashion bargain.
The Statement Skirt
I have to concede that you have to be feeling brave to be wearing this skirt and top as styled above, but if you can muster up the fashion courage – then wow, I will be green with envy. If – as a whole – it’s a look that’s just a little too much for you, then just wear each item separately. The gorgeous skirt with perhaps a navy or grey shirt or sweater, and the top with jeans or navy capris. By fashion-gal favourite Stella Jean, these items will take you through summer into autumn/winter and out again next year. Skirt, now £144, Top, now £129.
The Party Piece
Is it wrong to think about Christmas parties when it’s summer? Perhaps. But, this sparkly little number from By Malene Birger (now £87, down from £238) would be perfect for all things festive, not to mention great for parties at any time of year…
A classic sundress
Gorgeous sundresses are surprisingly hard to find, so it’s worth snapping one up when you find one you love. This Sketchbook Midi dress by Corey Lynn Calter at Anthropologie ticks all the boxes and is classic enough to be wheeled out every year. Now £58.95 Also check out this Audrey Hepburn-esq little number that Natasha has from Boden.
I’ve loved this poncho for a long time. The good news, it’s now £136 in the sale. The bad, it’s not in my size. Although, there are still ones left….
Who doesn’t love a star sweater. Whilst Chinti & Parker is the (expensive) holy grail, Hush’s gorgeous Star Gazer sweaters come in beautiful hues and really are the perfect fit (both Natasha and I have one). I am currently wearing my blue one (as pictured above), although am very tempted to invest in the equally gorgeous coral version. Now £40. And, if you’re really in the mood for a bargain, these mohair sweaters are available for just £15.
