Style Around the World: Barcelona

Barcelona. A seaside city of culture, beauty, late night suppers and 'faff-free' styling. Londoner-turned-ardent-Barcelona-fan (and resident), journalist Gemma Askham, lets us in on the city's style secrets. The labels to shop, the Instagrammers to follow, the joy of jumpsuits, eschewing a bra if it doesn't suit an outfit...…

Sydney Style: Cassie Moxham from Chic Mama tells us all

Now that we are firmly at the start of summer (are we? Can we call it summer? I think of June as summer, but maybe you still think of it as Spring….?) – Anyway, late Spring/early Summer whatevs, it’s the time of year when we Brits need to shed our layers and embrace lighter dressing, which after MONTHS of jumpers and coats and jeans and boots, can sometimes be tricky. To help us out, we are searching for inspiration from Cassie Moxham of Sydney-based blog Chic Mama. After all, being an Aussie, she knows all about dressing for warm seasons, and being a stylish one to boot, we wanted to get her inside view on Australian style… Where do you live? Sydney, specifically on the lower north shore, about a 20 min drive from the CBD and 30 mins or so to the beaches. How would you describe your style? Classic, feminine, with a touch of bohemian.   I wear mainly a neutral colour palette – lots of white, grey, navy, tan.  I love a nice floral print too. I know everyone is different but how would you describe general Australian style? Maybe a bit more relaxed.  Most of the population lives near…

Style around the world: How to dress like a Swede

Ever since we started our Style around the World series, I’ve been desperate to find someone to give us an insight into Swedish style. And now (drum roll please) we’ve found one…Born and raised in Sweden, but based in London, Gabrielle Spang is the founder of ScandiMini, a fab online boutique (and shop in Brook Green) focusing on the kind of super-stylish Scandinavian childrenswear that we love (we’re talking laid-back, relaxed, age-appropriate…) As someone who has lived in both countries, we thought Gabrielle was the perfect person to talk to about the differences in Swedish and British style, not to mention give us her thoughts on why Brits are just so Scandi-crazy at the moment. From the quintessential Swedish look to the top children’s Scandi brands, Gabrielle opens her little Swedish style book……

Style around the world: How to dress like a Norwegian

As so often is the way, I first discovered Marte Frisnes‘ beautiful jewellery on Instagram. And whilst, there may be a lot of things to look at on Instagram, her stunning tasselled bracelets stopped me in my tracks. They are so ridiculously gorgeous, they should come with a health warning. And then there’s everything else. From star bracelets to single tassel bracelets, her charm necklace and fab earrings, it’s almost too hard to decide on a favourite. When I discovered that Marte is Norwegian, but based in the UK, I was instantly intrigued. Both Natasha and I (and I think a lot of people) have a fascination with Scandinavian style and having already covered Denmark in our occasional Style Around the World series, we were desperate to know more about style in Norway. Is it completely geared around the weather? Are Norwegians trend-led or more classic in their approach to fashion? And what about the Norwegian attitude to the body? Thankfully, Marte could answer all our questions and more……

Style around the world: LA Woman

I’m pretty fascinated by Los Angeles. I’ve only been there once (on a rainy New Year’s road trip with my friend Tash) and with the ridiculously bad weather, I don’t think I saw it in its best light. However, that hasn’t put me off. I love the idea of the great weather (most of the time), the orange trees, the ocean, the hills, the outdoor lifestyle…it just all sounds fab (although the traffic, not so much). Although, really, I’m basing this all on the TV programmes and films I’ve seen, so in reality, it could all be a load of old baloney. One thing, I do know for certain is that The City of Angels isn’t traditionally thought of as a Fashion Hotspot. It’s meant to be more of a shorts and t-shirt place than a high-fashion mecca, but is that true? Moreover, if we’re dealing with fact v. fiction, is LA the hotbed of plastic surgery that we are led to believe? Are women really as obsessed with health and fitness as rumour has it? So many questions. And, thankfully we have some answers, from our latest Style Around the World correspondent – awesome job alert –  Polly Morgan,…

Style around the world: Copenhagen Calling

It’s no secret that Natasha and I have a thing for Scandinavian style. Although let’s face it, doesn’t everyone? If it’s not Nordic TV programmes, food or interiors, then it’s fashion with Danish and Swedish designers fast becoming the brands on the most-stylish women’s hips. Because of our fascination with Scandi style and because we’d heard that Copenhagen is something of a hotbed for incredible design talent, we wanted to get the inside story on the city’s style. Having discovered British journalist Cathy Strongman (pictured below with her two children) through her excellent blog Designs on Denmark, we asked her to tell us more about life in Copenhagen. After 5 years living in the city Cathy has just left Copenhagen for a new life in Houston, which she will documenting in a new blog soon (watch this space!) Luckily, we grabbed her in time to find out everything from the coolest local designers to Danish women’s attitude to their bodies……

Style Around the World: The Bermuda Triangle

We’re nearly through the biannual sartorial merry-go-round that is the Fashion Week season – can you imagine dressing for that? (Kudos to my friends who do it with such aplomb.) But let us imagine, for one fleeting minute, we live somewhere with a sub-tropical climate. Where summer lasts nearly all year and frost (let alone snow) is but a vague concept. Rebecca Hanson [above, in Halston Heritage dress and hat by Making Waves] lives this life. Having grown up in Bermuda, she moved to the UK for school and worked in London for several years. In 2012, she moved back to Bermuda (why wouldn’t you?) to start up her company TABS selling authentic Bermuda shorts in a fabulous rainbow of colours – thus combining her twin aims: to start her business and “embrace island life…and now my husband!” You can follow her on Instagram (tabs_bermudashorts); Twitter @TABS_BDA and Facebook (TABS.BermudaShorts). But how do you dress when sunshine and tropical temperatures are the norm? We asked the super-chic (and very inspiring) Rebecca to share her secrets……

Style around the World: it’s up to you New York

New York. New York. So good they named it twice. So fashionable that it’s the city that always hosts the first Fashion Week of the season. While London is heralded for its creativity, Paris for its classic brands and Milan for its glamour, it’s New York where the business of fashion really takes precedence. It’s where the likes of Marc Jacobs, Victoria Beckham and Diane von Furstenberg show off their hard work and where the big guns of the Fashion World such as Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington rub their immaculately-clad shoulders with the celebrities du jour on the Front Row. And so, to herald the start of the new season and the fact that New York Fashion Week is in mid-swing, we decided to delve a little deeper into the Big Apple’s style. Which is why we turned to Kimberly Bernhardt, an ex-pat Brit who has made both New York her home and the city’s super-groomed style her own. Kimberly who works in Public Relations and has a brilliantly curated Pinterest board (take a look and steal her style) lives in Brooklyn, works in Manhattan and after 10 years in the Big Apple knows all there is to know about…

Style around the World: South Africa calling

What do you know about South African style? I have to be honest, I don’t know much. Which is why I was so interested to read Philippa Allen‘s take on it. As part of our Style around the World series (we’ve also covered Sydney and Paris), we thought Pip, a treatment writer and creative consultant, who spends six months of the year in London and six months of the year in Cape Town (jealous? moi?) was the perfect person to ask. Here she talks us through the differences between British and South African attitudes to style, health and beauty. We’re betting the weather has a lot to answer for……

Style around the World: French Dressing

Paris. It’s the city of fashion, non? Yes, there are the three other traditional catwalk capitals – London, Milan and New York, not to mention fabulously chic new style cities like Stockholm, Copenhagen, Sydney and Mumbai, but Paris, well, it’s just the original when it comes to haute couture, legendary design houses and the very essence of chic. But, what’s it really like when it comes to style? As part of our Style around the World series (read our first on Sydney, Australia here) we’ve asked Sarah Pearce, a British lawyer who has recently returned to London after 4 years living and working in the City of Lights to spill the beans on French dressing. Are Parisians really as chic as reputation says they are? Do French women eat? Just how do they have such great skin? We asked her all this and more……
