Why a denim jacket is this spring/summer’s hottest cover-up…

You probably have one in your wardrobe already. If not, it’s time to snap one up as denim jackets are this spring/summer’s serious wardrobe must-have (and they’re not just for 20-somethings either)….

I love it when a classic item like a denim jacket becomes Fashion’s latest object of lust, and even more so when you own said item already. Denim jackets are suddenly in the Style Spotlight again, with everyone from front-row fashionistas to seriously stylish silver foxes wearing one. Why? Well, denim jackets are a classic. The perfect cover-up for a warm Spring day (remember those?) and a chilly summer night, they look cool and insouciant, which is always a good look in my book. They are also really versatile – you can wear them with trousers, skirts, dresses, shorts – even jeans if you’re brave enough to go Double Denim (I’m not sure I am!) They’re also ageless.  Yes, there are some styles more associated with teens and playboy bunnies, but steer clear of overly embellished, sequinned jackets and plump for a classic cropped style for instant chic. Dark indigo denim is instantly smarter, as are the military style collared ones or long line versions with waist ties (as per this one from &OtherStories). Whilst plain oversized jackets (like this French Connection one) can look great (see below), for me, it’s the classic cropped, fitted version worn with arms rolled up that I love the best. A denim jacket may not take you to the boardroom, but for weekend off-duty style it’s hard to beat.
