Getting into Gingham

After an unfortunate encounter with a pair of trousers earlier this year – they made my husband comment that I looked like an extra on Desperate Housewives. So not the look I was after – I had admired gingham from afar but not worn it. But then I saw this dress…

I first spotted it on a pregnant woman on my local high road (it really works for pregnancy because the ruching can sit above the bump – plus, it’s stretchy) and backtracked (taking the Scooting Menace with me) to ask her where it was from. I ordered immediately – and whilst waiting for it, saw the lovely Joanne from The Stylist and the Wardrobe wearing it. That’s a seal of style approval right there.

It’s just about the perfect sling it on and wear it anywhere. I am such a dress girl in summer – it’s just so easy and so cool (essential when the mercury is topping out at 34 degrees in London). This one would take you to work, out for drinks or – in my case – for a farewell supper at swanky Dalloway Terrace, followed by a morning mooching around Notting Hill’s gardens, small children in tow. (Yes, that basket holds water/rice cakes/spare pants for one small boy/toy cars. Not so glam, now, eh?) You could also wear it on your shoulders, if the off-the-shoulder thing has you hesitating.

I’m now a total convert and am seeing gingham possibilities everywhere.  Here’s another off the shoulder dress from JCrew – in blue this time.I also looooooovvveee this maxi dress but fear it is probably a bit too maxi for me. And I am wondering if I can possibly justify this button-up number – also from Urban Outfitters? If you like a bolder check, this off-the-shoulder top is easy breezy (would look great over wide-leg trousers). Zara, of course, has some excellent offerings – this mini dress has the floaty promise of being an good lunch companion (you know: space for expansion).

Here’s a little list of what else I’m coveting…

1. Check skirt and top, £29.99, Zara

2. Navy midi dress, £32, Dorothy Perkins

3. Red dress, £39.99, Zara

4. Gingham print bikini top, £13.30, and bottoms, £9.10 both La Redoute (30%  off with code SUMMER)

5. Ruffle skirt, £35, M&S

6. Bow blouse, £19.99, Mango

7. Yellow check top, £19.99, Mango
