How to….buy a gift by Caroline Stanbury

20130122_s04-012fn-®venniIf there’s one person who should know about buying gifts, it’s Caroline Stanbury, founder of  Gift Library, both an online boutique and a bespoke gift buying service. With every piece carefully chosen by Caroline and her team, Gift Library is the place to go for niche, extra-special presents from the likes of Sophie Hulme, Acqua di Parma and Marie Chantal. It offers a brilliantly curated selection of items, with many wonderfully covetable things that are hard to find elsewhere. And with gifts for every budget (from under £50 to well, the sky’s the limit), it is, in theory, the perfect place to buy someone else a present. Although, with choices like this, I wouldn’t mind shopping for myself…

Caroline’s top five gift buying tips….

1) Choose luxury not necessity – nobody wants an ironing board or a bathroom set! Go for something frivolous or funny, something that they’d never usually buy for themselves.

2) Always consider the person you are buying for, and what they would like. Just because you love it doesn’t necessarily mean they will.

3) Stick to your budget and know what you want to spend – a great unique gift doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg.

4) Make sure the packaging is spectacular – how the gift is presented is almost as important as the gift itself.

5) Listen out for cheeky hints they’re sure to drop. Choosing something you know a loved one has been hankering after is a great way to show them they’re appreciated.
