Goodbye James Dean, hello Every Woman’s Essential. The leather jacket, once the choice of rock’n’roll icons and hairy bikers, is now about as rebellious as a chocolate biscuit and a cup of tea. So much so, it transcends mere trends and is now a year-round trusted wardrobe staple. Not just restricted to black and biker style, leather is surprisingly versatile, meaning that with the right cut and right colour, it’s virtually age-less. Pair with faded jeans and a Breton top a la the always-stylish Emmanuelle Alt (I have a major style crush on Alt – just check out how cool she looks above). Throw over a white t-shirt for dress-down cool Kate Moss vibe. Or team with a dress or skirt for a go-anywhere look (bottom pic). It’s your must-have item for autumn…
Belstaff is the big daddy when it comes to leather – it’s to leather jackets what Burberry is to macs, which means jaw-dropping quality and jaw-dropping prices. If you, like Kate Moss, a long-term Belstaff fan and one-time face of the brand, are looking to invest then it’s a great label to go for. Otherwise, try Rick Owens, Balmain (you’ll need to take out a new mortgage) and Alexander Wang (I love his Tromp l’oeil jacket featuring a jacket with built-in vest).
For an investment piece that doesn’t quite break the bank (don’t get me wrong – they’re expensive, but nowhere near the Haute Leather prices), then mid-range designer labels such as MiH, Ganni, 2nd Day and Iro do beautiful (and beautifully made) jackets. Also keep an eye out on the always-fantastic Outnet for designer styles for less.
The high street can and does do leather very well. Just check out this old season jacket from Zara (pictured above, no longer available). Keep an eye out for Todd Lynn’s debut collection for Designers at Debenhams which hits stores on the 21st October and features (I am told) a knock-out leather jacket.
