It can be tempting to keep your best clothes for, well, best. That flute sleeve beauty of a top? Can you really wear it on the school run, to work, around the house? Or that beautiful summery maxi dress, could you possibly wear it to the shops? We think yes. Life, is very much, for living, which also applies to your wardrobe. If you love something wear it and wear it and wear it, as what’s the point in having something you adore just hanging forlornly in your wardrobe? With that in mind, we’ve both been busy checking out and trying on Marks & Spencer’s new summer collection, which is very good this year and nicely ticking the sartorial boxes we love. Gorgeous flared midi skirts? YES! Tasselled jewellery and pom-pommed sandals? YES! Statement sleeves? YES SIRREEE! Here’s what we’ve found that’s available to buy in store and online now (and with a @0% discount if you’re a Sparks card holder!)….
The thing about M&S, as I said whilst marching my Mum around her local store, rifling through the rails and insisting she try a fabulous pair of tan loafers and Isabel Marant-esque blouse (reader, she bought them both and has not taken off the shoes since, except to sleep). The thing is, that when M&S get it right, it’s so right because you get style married with that M&S quality. And recently, I just keep stumbling across gems (I’ve bought this, this and these – as you can see if you follow us on Instagram). So when asked to pull an edit together, it was more a case of what not to include. I love these blouses (everyone should have a statement blouse in their sartorial arsenal) – perfect with jeans (or denim cut-offs/skirt should it ever deign to warm up). If these are too colourful and a bit much for you – then check out the fluted sleeve tee (or the striped tops Alex and I are wearing on Instagram). Try a colourful bottom half – this skirt is sheer joy (and it has POCKETS) and these trousers would be as fabulous with a grey tee as they are would be for a wedding with heels and a statement top. And may we take a moment to exhort the joy of a shirt dress: wear it anywhere.
Yellow dress, £49.50; Frill detail shirt, £29.50; Embroidered sleeve blouse, £35; Flute sleeve tee, £25; Print skirt, £29.50; Yellow trousers, £25; Peasant blouse, £35; Off the shoulder Bardot blouse, £25; Orange shirt dress, £59
When it comes to summer accessories, I tend to think more is more. Pile on the brackets! Bring out those pom poms! Summer is the time when you can embrace your inner hippie and wear tassels all day, every day. M&S has really upped its game on the accessories front this year with a range of statement sandals including some gorgeous pom pom ones that channel the spirit of those very expensive Greek ones and stunning coin detail ones that would look amazing with a simple dress. They’ve also included some beautiful pieces to appeal to those of you for whom boho is most definitely a no-no. The cross body twist lock bag comes in several colours – I really like the red for day and the silver for night, whilst this white leather shopper (not pictured) is a real showstopper. I also like these mismatched earrings. Mismatch is a big tend this year, set to run and run into autumn/winter, so buy now. Finally, M&S sunglasses are always great. Really affordable and good quality, I always stock up on a pair every season.
Pom pom sandals, £35; Woven bracelets, £15; Shopper, £29.50; Summer hat, £17.50; Friendship bracelet, £12.50; Cat Eye sunglasses, £15; Coin sandals, £35; Twist lock bag, £25; Leather plait sandals, £25; Circle Mismatch earrings, £7.50
