As are candles. Always. Neom has – just in time for Valentine’s – released their limited edition Love candle, a heady blend of Mimosa, Tuberose and Jasmine. It smells like a perfect, balmy summer evening. Present me with this and a side order of pretty chocolates, and I’d be yours.
If it’s scent you’re after, Jo Malone’s Red Roses collection is a surefire winner. Classic, timeless, can’t-go-wrong (and almost definitely classier than the cliche bouquet of red roses).

Books and chocolate? Why didn’t you say so before? I would love a little package of grey deliciousness from Persephone Books. Only hearts of stone could fail to be moved by Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day; The Making of a Marchioness is singularly charming and unexpected (it was one of Nancy Mitford’s favourites); Lady Rose and Mr Memmary is a delightful love letter to – amongst other things – Scotland. (I might get it as a Valentine for my dear friend Katie.
And if you must do underwear, make it entirely lovely. I give you a budget v blow out option, depending upon the depth of your lover’s (or your) purse.
