You know the Devil Wears Prada myth, wherein fashionistas are mean girls? I can heartily debunk this. And as evidence, I give you this week’s My Uniform, Alex Lunt, one of the nicest fashion girls around. I met her when we both worked at GLAMOUR. She has a very hip, insouciant French girl meets hint of rock chick style which is innately cool but accessible. And she can really scout the high street bargains. Read on to be totally inspired.
I love the J.Crew shows – a lot of my inspiration comes from how those outfits are put together.
I also love Rachel Bilson, Kate Bosworth and the Olsen twins.
My day-to-day uniform starts with a great pair of jeans
For an average day at work, it’s boyfriend jeans and knit, every time. I love denim by Current/Elliot
t (especially my new patchwork jeans) are a key staple. I also love Gap
for everyday stripes and boyfriend jeans. A good pair of trainers, like the classic New Balance 420’s
and my gorgeous Toga Pulla
buckle boots get me through the week. (Styling involved a lot of running around – hence the flats!)
My go-to stores
School Sweater, £165, MiH
, Wool box pleat jacket, £135, COS
, American Vintage cotton-jersey top, £45, net-a-porter
, Sailor top, £43, American Apparel
Boots! I splurge on boots because I wear them every day
….and as long as they go with everything they are worth the money! And I bought 3 pairs Zara silver metallic pointed flats – they go with everything and can be worn day and night, to work and to events! I wore them all summer and then had to re-buy for the many weddings I was attending.
Pointed moccasin with tassel, £25.99, Zara
I have a designer handbag that I will wear for years, but I do love a good high-street bag.
My Marc Jacobs handbag was a birthday present 5 years ago! And it’s still my favourite special piece that will never grow old In terms of how much to invest, it really depends on the individual but I would say you can get a really great, well-made, classic designer bag between £500-700. This being said, you can also get some incredibly well made 100% leather handbags from Cos, Whistles etc that will last just as long… But I’m currently using an across-body faux snakeskin bag from H&M – I’ve been getting so many comments on it!
Mini swing flapover crocodile bag, £195, Whistles at Asos
Believe it or not my basic everyday product is a Nivea tinted moisturiser!
But I couldn’t live without dry shampoo and Bobbi Brown red lipstick
My top styling tips
Alex working her A/W ’13 look (and her bargainous H&M bag)
1. Clash your prints (tartan and leopard in my pic – who would have thought it!)
2. Baggy boyfriend jeans with bright coloured courts (a la the Manrepeller).
3. Always buy comfy shoes in bulk – when they stop doing your favourite trainers or sandals in the summer it is so annoying.
4. A statement necklace with the plainest of outfits can take you from day to night.
5. Finally, sports luxe isn’t just for the gym – team your trainers with smart trousers and sweatshirts with silk skirts for a cool yet comfy look.
My secret to feeling instantly ‘dressed up’
Super-high, barely-there sandals. My favourites are from River Island. (These ones a
re just £45.)
