My Uniform: Alexandra Stedman, founder of The Frugality

Alex

You might know Alexandra from the pages of Red magazine, where she is the Style Editor (and has on occasion appeared modelling her latest sartorial inspirations – as you’d expect from a girl with such a great look). Her pages are, quite frankly, gorgeous: if I bought everything her expert eye includes, my bank balance would be crippled. We also love her blog, The Frugality, which is not, she explains, “about being cheap, it’s about being smart”. This we like – as we do the mix of fashion lifestyle, cooking and wedding planning (congratulations!) tips. Plus, because she’s a stylist, so there are plenty of genius shopping and how-to advice to be picked up along the way.

Who wouldn’t want to hear more from The Frugality? So, we were completely thrilled when she agreed to share her Uniform with us.

“My style is quite preppy tomboyish”

I love J Crew, and wear a lot of flats with boyfriend jeans. And obviously, my signature glasses.

I love Emanuelle Alt’s style: classic shirt with a rock and roll skinny leather trouser.

“I am a compulsive shirt buyer…”

…classic white cotton from Uniqlo, blue polka dot from Gap, peach silk from Equipment… They look great with jeans, tailored trousers and skirts – a no brainer!

“I can’t live without…”

I love Cos – particularly their small collared shirts and tailored trousers.

I like A-line skirts and have a fab floral print one from Cacharel which I team with a sweatshirt. I love sweatshirts, and use them to dress down any look – I recently bought a Zoe Karssen batman sweatshirt from Matches. For shoes, I mainly go to Office as they are so on the pulse and reasonably priced. A sweatshirt and a blazer can mean you always look chic, but never cold. A fine cashmere crew neck too, J.Crew or Boden do great ones.

“My go-to shops are…”

H&M for fast fashion: it just works for me. Fenwick is my favourite department store in London and I would go here if I was looking for something special. They stock both Mother of Pearl and Sophie Hulme, whose clothes I adore.

“My sartorial obsession”

Flat shoes. It’s a healthy obsession as I know they’ll always be used in my line of work. I’ve bought quite a few ‘fashion’ trainers lately, too: leopard vans from Kurt Geiger and the Liberty x Nikes from Office. If I had all the money in the world, I’d wear Pierre Hardy shoes, they’re so cool.

“I’m not a huge statement jewellery wearer”

But if I did wear something, it would be Lulu Frost: I have one necklace by her, which I love and her collection for Whistles is divine. I love Vanrycke fine chain necklaces at Kabiri and Alex Monroe.

“I never have an ‘it’ bag, but mix my bags up on a weekly basis.”

Maybe it’s a yellow faux snakeskin Zara number or a cross-body neon Zatchel, it always has to hold all my notebooks, pencil case, diary and iPad mini.

“My top three Frugality style rules”

1. Whenever I buy anything, I think of at least 3 things I can wear it with.

2. If you’re saving for something in particular, be it a Mulberry bag or Jimmy Choo shoes, try not to waste money on lunches and coffees throughout the day and you will get to your target much quicker.

3. Be bold with your investments. A bright yellow cross-body bag might actually be a better investment than a classic black tote. The yellow bag might breathe new life into your wardrobe and be your ‘plain outfit’ saving grace.

A huge thank you, Alex, You can subscribe to her wonderful blog and follow her @TheFrugality.
