My Uniform: Kate Blythe, Editorial and Content Director at Matches

Unknown-4

Meet Kate Blythe. You probably don’t realise it, but Kate wields a big influence over what we wear (and how we put outfits together). As the Editorial and Content Director for Matches, she oversees all editorial content on the site (which this week  includes this fab interview with Stella McCartney). We predict much more in the way of excitement on the site (Kate previously edited Net-a-Porter’s online magazine). Oh, and she has three adorable children, Freddie, 5, Lilian, 2, and Florence, 1 (she describes herself as “living life in the most full-on way right now” – which is something of an understatement given what she’s achieved).

She is also a total style maven – a real lesson in buying to invest and then wearing what you love to death. We love how she describes her look: “I’ve always been hugely influenced by a 1960s Brigitte Bardot: that kind of French-sexy mussed-up hair and kohl-lined eyes look has always inspired me. I aim to be sharply dressed yet still a little undone, it’s a motto that serves me well.” On her Twitter account (follow her @KateBlythe she describes herself as “the ultimate shopaholic”. Suffice to say, we couldn’t wait to get a sneak peek at her wardrobe….

“I live for great jeans”

I have hundreds, and I upscale their desirability by adding statement heels or boots (favourites are Isabel Marant, Alexander Wang and Chloe); a Stella tux jacket, or a Rick Owens leather jacket; and always a killer handbag from Chanel, Celine or Chloe. I have an extensive wardrobe from years of working in fashion and I love everything that I own. It makes my mother shudder to see me swinging my Chanel bag over my shoulder to collect my son from swimming – I wear everything I own till it falls apart. I also love Uniqlo for the cashmere jumpers and round neck merino wool sweaters that are a perfect accompaniment to an Isabel Marant Biker jacket and distressed skinny jeans.

“My go-to everyday outfit always includes one statement piece…”

…Whether that’s a printed Equipment shirt, a hot pink Stella blazer, pr a pair of Fendi studded shoes. And then I simply dress my statement piece down with denim, cigarette pants or leather skinny jeans. It’s all about a hi–lo mix with me. I also own blazers in every colour from pale cream to soft grey and jet black – this one item can instantly transform me from mum on the school run to boss of a big team in a flash.

“I’m loyal to my trust Chanel bags”
But I also love my roomy Chloe tote and my orange Celine trapeze bag that keeps every look feeling fresh.I’m carrying a Celine trapeze tote right now but I am hoping to invest in this simply chic Saint Laurent grey bag which I think will have the ability to dress up any outfit in an instant.

“I love J Brand denim”
…But I have recently dipped my toe in the Frame Denim water and have to admit I’m a bit of a convert. The white skinnies, pale blue skinnies – I just love them. Flattering, easy, smart – the perfect mix.

“I can’t live without Stella McCartney – she’s my go-to designer.”
I love the way she makes smart clothes for cool women. You never feel too fashion but you still feel fashionable enough in her pieces – cashmere overcoats, blazers, jump-suits, IT-knits all make their way into my wardrobe. I also have a beautifully cut crisp white evening shirt from Joseph that I live in and I’ve just invested in a white Trager Delaney shirt that adds a grown up feel to every outfit. Isabel Marant is also a designer I love: she does is that French off-duty thing so well. I love her leather biker jackets and wedge ankle boots – I live in them. The Stella pink blazer is a summer winner in my view – smart, fresh, cool – it’s perfect.

“I definitely over-purchase jackets”
I get into buying flurries of a certain style – blazers, bikers, and now more recently bombers – it’s my easy style win. My recent love affair with the bomber shows no sign of waning either and I just bought the most beautiful L’Agence bomber  that I am living in at the moment.

“I love jewellery – a statement cuff always updates any look without looking too ‘trend driven'”
I’m dreaming of the Saint Laurent studded cuff, £430, right now. I also love a statement ring and I have my eye on a beautiful Delfina Delettrez eye ring, £335

Thank you so much, Kate! Here she is, rocking a Chanel bag at her desk, and planning the next hot coverage for Matches…

[…] What you need is a perfect, perfectly simple shirt, loosely tucked into your jeans (skinny cropped and boyfriend-fit options below). I seem to have a Donna Ida obsession today – but both these blouses are ideal. Ida – designed by Donna herself – is a fabulous range of wear-anywhere and all-the-time pieces – I LOVE the Mrs Thatcher pussy bow blouse.  (Do also check out Equipment silk blouses, as recommended by Matches’ Kate Blythe.)
