By the end of the sales it can be a bit hit-and-miss as to what you’ll find. Shops look like they’ve been ram raided (Zara is always awful), so avoid them unless you’re very brave and stick to online where with second and third markdowns in place, there are some great finds to be had…
The Sports Trouser
A big trend of 2016 that’s set to roll on strong this year, the sports trouser or luxe track pant was called ‘the height of chic’ in the Times’ magazine on Saturday. These Me + Ems (not on sale) are modern classics (I own and can vouch for them. Stylish! An elasticated waist! Basically the dream…) – these and these (team with heels and a shirt or cashmere to nail the luxe athleisure trend) are on sale and also look great. Whilst these Whistles trousers (pictured) aren’t on sale (sorry!) I wanted to show you how good they can look. Use for inspiration or throw caution to the wind and buy. This Maje pair has also caught my eye. They’re called ‘leggings’ online, but to me they look more like a trouser and a very nice and versatile pair too. What do you think? Answers on a postcard please…Now £87.50 (was £175) If you’re not 100% sure about the look, then go for this pair from M&S for £11 (down from £25). I tried on in-store a few months ago and would’ve bought except they only had long in stock (such is the woe of a titch like me). This embroidered pair of joggers is a different take on the trend – and at £16 a pair, well worth a go.
The Killer Dress
Being about 105 years old, my idea of a killer dress is slightly different to that of a Kardashian/Jenner (this as with many things I might add). More (fabric) is definitely more in my book. This long-sleeved maxi (it’s all about the sleeves this year!) is fabulous. I’m also quite taken with this – hey, I was a teen in the 90s, what can I say? This Sideline dress doesn’t look great on the hanger in this link (but it’s cheapest here), but google the dress and you’ll see how fab it looks – indigo with pockets – what’s not to love? Looking for a knock-out dress for an upcoming wedding or party? This McQ by Alexander McQueen beauty is now half-price. I also love this from Brit brand Needle & Thread – a real wow dress that’s suitable for work events and parties.
Everyone needs jeans. On the high street, Gap is my go-to brand for denim (i love the girlfriend cut – although size down as they can bag up). Although I also like H&M and others rave about Topshop, (which just don’t suit me). Gap’s denim sale is insane at the moment. Not all the sizes are in stock, but the prices (some as low as £9.99) are amazing if you can find your fit. I like the look of these true skinny ankle jeans, these two-tone best girlfriends and these wide-leg crops (not worn as styled!), which at the aforementioned £9.99 are worth trying just for the price. Off the high street MiH are a great choice. These cult classic Marrakech pair is now on sale for £67.50 (down from £225) or non-bodycon version for £64.50.
Away from jeans, the culotte trend isn’t going away. This pair from Whistles would look amazing with a fitted navy jumper for spring/early summer. And at £47, this cropped navy pair is an almost-must for chic day-to-day dressing.
I’ve always preferred loose to tight on top as I’m conscious of my tummy. This indigo kimono top from Gap feels just right for spring/summer. Also from Gap, this shirt is a great high-street version of MiH’s brilliant oversized shirt. A Breton jumper? Yes, please – this by Toast is also beautiful and at £9.99 this slouchy Breton from Mango is a must. Are you a (See by) Chloe girl? You will be in this beautiful lace top or try this white lace one from Needle & Thread or this from Marc Jacobs, which was originally £245 – I’m not sure I need to say how much of a wardrobe staple a great white blouse can be. And you know how we love a navy jumper right? This Aran one from Chinti & Parker is now half-price (and perfect for snuggling up in now and for winters to come).
Over on The Outnet where everything is permanently on sale, this cashmere turtleneck from N.Peal is new in and half-price at £109.50.
With spring coming you may not be thinking about a new coat, but it’s definitely a great time to snap one up with many on sale at under half-price. Go for classic and it could last you for years to come. Take this check wool-blend coat from Mango, half-price at £59.99 and something of an Instagram favourite (also on trend and recommended by Pandora Sykes in the Sunday Times). Then there’s this navy coat from Baukjen (pictured at the top), classic and timeless, it’s a real keeper and under half-price. Finally, this charcoal grey coat from Hush is now £100 and looks fabulous.
The Leopard Print Boot
An honourable mention for these beauties, which I would love if they had my size – on sale for £95 (down from £165) from the brilliant Seven Boot Lane at Hero.
