Get your Sparkle On

Yes, it’s still November, but party season is peeking around the corner. ‘Tis the season to get your sparkle on. And nothing, but nothing, says festive dressing like a sprinkle of sequins.

I’d like to be clear that my reality right now is most definitely not sequin-sprinkled. It is mostly dungaree-and-paint-splattered. However, a girl can dream. And it seems I’m not the only one. Expect to see Alex wearing wellies and the most divine pink sequin skirt on her next dog walk, so in love is she with this skirt. I have a black sequin pencil skirt (this is similar but more fabulous) which was a mainstay during the festive  season last year, and it will doubtless make a reappearance this year.

There is no such thing as lesser sequinned: if you’re in, you’re in. Expect to feel party-like as soon as you pull them on. Fortunately, the party feeling does not have to break the bank: sequins are to be spotted in many high street establishments. Hush always do a fine line in casual sequinnage. Hobbs and Wallis are here for you should you err towards thinking that when you dress up, you want to dress up. (I have my eye on that sparkly blazer.) John Lewis’ splendidly-named Twelve Dresses of Christmas is a sparkly delight: special mention must go to this Mint Velvet dress.

To avoid resembling a walking bauble, marry your sequins with something more low key. So, a skirt with a slouchy cashmere sweater (v or crew neck depending upon your assets) or a sweatshirt. Pop a sequin vest under a blazer with jeans or simple skinny black trousers. Wear flats (even trainers) with a full-on sequin frock. A sequin sweatshirt is the epitome of dressed down party: think of it as a classy take on the Christmas jumper.
