Shopping the Sale: 5 Easy Home Tweaks

I tend to treat the sales as an opportunity to invest (in something which might still be expensive but is considerably reduced – see Alex’s 5 bags post for prime examples) or to update my home. For instance: bedding (I tend to head to The White Company), luxurious cotton towels (ditto – also see John Lewis). kitchen implements (Le Creuset or knives – we recently realised that our kitchen knives are about 100 years old and can only cut by exercising a sawing motion), glasses, soft furrnishings or incidentals – the little things which perk up your coffee table or brighten your breakfast time.

Habiri cocktail napkins, £1.95 each (were £4.00), Anthropologie

New napkins are the easiest update ever. And these are adorable. I also love this Ikat cushion, the handcrafted rugs (another blissfully easy update – but on a bigger scale) and this baking dish – which is so pretty I’d be tempted to keep it on display.

Set of two rush baskets, £52.50 (was £75), Garden Trading

On a scale of 1-10, how surprised are you that I should nominate baskets as a sales purchase. I know: I am obsessed. But they are so useful! I also love these oval baskets. Now, where can I put them?….

788488_l1Ah. cushions. Instant gratification is thy name. Heals have a splendid selection in their sale. How about this blue Art Deco-esque number? (Also available in sunshine yellow.) See also the matching throw – no sofa arm is complete without one, in my opinion. The Jack Stripe has an old-fashioned ticking edge to it. Side note: these Ercol bar stools would be a happy marriage with a kitchen island – should you have such a thing. And this lamp is a classic.

Admittedly, this is a slightly larger update, but these chairs from Habitat are design classics in the making (also available in black, red and yellow). The bench is also reduced – I love the idea of swapping chairs for a bench along one side of the kitchen table. I see a row of small people perched, happily having tea.

The White Company hasn’t yet started its sale proper – but they do have up to 60% off bed linen. Glory be.
