We were – for all of a week – living the summer dream. We ate outside. Slept under just a sheet whilst being blasted by fans. Watched the strawberries swell and the geraniums luxuriate in the heat. Now, well, it’s not cold exactly. But it’s not tropical. Fortunately, it can be summer all year ’round if you follow our advice.
For, if summer’s lease hath all too short a date (who said we weren’t au fait with our literature?), then might I recommend bringing the sunshine into your home?
A touch of rattan
No longer dated and just for al fresco purposes, rattan is enjoying a resurgence. I love the rocking chair (above, £220, Urban Outfitters) and Habitat has a fine selection in their sale. Check out this splendid chair. I also like this rattan stool from Amara.
Blue and white
Checks on an armchair. Or stripes, come to that – ticking-style, like the ones above. Tiles. Tea towels. China. A lamp base. Cushions. A tea set. If I had a ‘summer room’ (a girl can dream…) this is how I would decorate it. With this tableware from Zara Home and these printed cushions, or this one, perhaps? Or one of these…
If not your floors, then your furniture. This is a good one to DIY, incidentally. Maybe start with the furniture, though. (I warn you: it can be addictive. My mum started and found she couldn’t stop and would have distressed anything which stood still long enough.)
Opt for natural fibres and fabrics. Try swapping the base on your table lamp for a wooden one; throwing a sisal rug under your coffee table; stacking your crockery on shelves in kitchen; using a basket to store magazines at the side of your sofa.
