Spring/summer 2016: The John Lewis edit (hint: it’s really good…)

John Lewis. You probably don’t think of it as your number one destination for fashion. But, we can tell you with confidence, that it’s time to rethink this stance. Over the past few years, Britain’s favourite department store (I for one was giddy with excitement when a new branch opened in our nearest town), has seriously upped its game when it comes to style, stocking a brilliant edit of high street labels, niche designers such as The Finery (in store only) and Soludos, and its own brilliant in-house collection Somerset by Alice Temperley.

This week has seen the launch of their new Wonderland edit, which pulls together a dreamy collection of spring/summer pieces from across the store. Romantic, playful and perfect for the coming season, it’s choc full of gorgeous things – from shoes to bags and dresses – to covet. Here’s what Natasha and I have added to our lust lists…

ALEX

The Shoes…

I have been lusting after a new pair of white trainers for a while. Something to throw on with jeans, a dress, a pair of shorts…anything really. Flats are so much cooler than heels these days and nothing looks quite as fab as a pretty floral dress (as per the gorgeous Somerset by Alice Temperley one pictured above) toughened up with a pair of trainers. This pair of Supergas is just perfect. Not too chunky, just sporty enough, they’ll turn me into a slightly-older, slightly-more-frazzled Sussex-dwelling version of Alexa, right? £50

The Sunnies…

If there’s one thing that’s an essential for the summer, it’s sunglasses. Especially when the drive to school each morning involves a literal killer of a combination of windy country roads and low-lying, blazing bright sunshine (ok, obviously not all the time). As my current collection includes a) a scratched pair of Ralph Laurens, which look great, but are pretty useless as I can’t see out of them b) a bright orange pair from H&M’s children’s department, which I love, but weirdly everyone else thinks make me look like I’m an escapee from planet rave (I know, what could be wrong with that?) and c) a crappy old pair from the front of a magazine, I’m in the market for a new pair.  A lovely flattering shade, a slightly retro style and not scratched at all, I reckon this rose gold paircould be just the ticket. £25

The Blouse…

Mint Velvet are doing a nice line in white tops this season. Not only is there this gorgeous top I spied a few weeks ago, but I really like this Broderie-style blouse. Slung on with the Supergas, a pair of denim shorts and the sunnies, I’ll be summer-ready before you can say ‘where is the blinking sun?’ Also rather good dressed up for work or with a slinky old skirt, methinks….£69

NATASHA

The Bag…

234864757To my mind, nothing cheers up an outfit in an instance like a pop of colour in accessory form. So even whilst you shiver in your wintery ensemble, you can have a flash of summer days to come by virtue of simply picking up a bag. Hurrah. This hot pink shot of gloriousness will perk you up now – and carry you through the season of sunshine. It’s also perfect for a night out, FYI – teamed with these trousers if you were feeling particularly bold…

The Dress…002447548

As far as I’m concerned, nothing says ‘summer’ (in a sartorial sense) like a white dress. From June onwards, just look out for the woman in a white dress – who is blithely disregarding the fact that she is a. using the Tube (I know, I am quite possibly crazy); b. definitely not frolicking on a beach or in a flower-strewn meadow; c. if not at work, then hanging out with two small children. But, but but… Just look how chic it is. And think how flattering it will be against tanned (fake or otherwise) skin. This one is a beauty. I love the attention to detail. Phase Eight Lola dress, £150. P.S. I also l-o-v-e this French Connection dress (also in black).

The watch…

233596785Okay, so this is a *bit* of a cheat – as I already own this watch (with a tan strap), but the grey strap version is so incredibly sleek and chic. I am all about a large face (when it comes to timepieces) and the thought of this on a tanned arm is too good to resist Olivia Burton watch, £80.
