Want to know about style? Then ask a Fashion Editor. It’s pretty simple really. It’s not only their job, but it’s also in their dna. One such expert is Erica Davies, who lives in London with her husband James and their two children Charlie, 4, and Lila, 2, and is the founder of the brilliant blog Modern Mum Must-Have (we love her tips on fashion, home and kids’ style – do check it out.) Not only is Erica an expert on what looks good, she’s also a big champion of the high street, which means she has the lowdown on clothes that we can actually afford to buy – hurrah! Here’s what she’s wearing this spring…
I launched Modern Mum Must-Have (MMM) a month before I had Lila. She was my second baby, I knew what maternity leave would be all about and I wanted to have a creative project that would keep my brain ticking over, but also reflected me, my interests and my career. I have worked as a Fashion Editor on national papers and magazines for the best part of 15 years and also had like-minded friends with babies at the same time who read Living etc, Grazia and LOOK and who still wanted to shop in Whistles as well as have play dates and park trips! I effectively wanted to create a magaziney-blog that appealed to the interests of me and my friends – I call it a Fashion Editor’s Guide to Life, Style & Kids because I wanted to incorporate all the elements I love and relate it to my job.
I am more comfortable dressing for the office than at the weekends and wear a LOT of Cos, Zara, Topshop and ASOS. I tend to find myself going for midi skirts with a plain crew neck sweater (dress them up, dress them down, they’re the perfect wardrobe staple – I love Cos for their colours and quality and M&S men’s cashmere styles), statement necklace and ankle boots. It’s comfy, smart and you can inject a bit of personality in there too.
I also always wear a cocktail ring – my favourites are from Monica Vinader and Swarovski Crystallised. I love dresses and am always looking for great midi style – you just can’t beat a midi – I am so glad they’re staying for Spring/Summer 2014!
I can’t say no to a coat. I have to buy a new one each year. I’m all about a coat! My current favourites are a Spring pastel check coat from Topshop and a gorgeous muted grey Chinese floral bomber from H&M, which I am wearing with everything. I also really want to find the perfect trench, I love this season’s fluid styles. See, I’m obsessed!
I have recently come to the conclusion that I can’t do heels anymore. Well, I can, but mid-heels that you can actually walk in. The styles I’m wearing on rotation currently are some gorgeous navy brogues from Boden (they do amazing accessories), Zara black court shoes, some great grey suede flats from H&M and am desperate to get my tootsies into – wait for it – a pair of AMAZING sandals from Clarks! They’re white and silver, flat and SO comfy.
This Summer I am going to be all over an ugly, flat sandal. I’ve seen about 5 pairs I love – they’re from Dune, Russell & Bromley and ASOS. I also really need (!!) a pair of olive green Nike Air Max too – I walk a lot and want them for my commute and to wear with my cropped black trousers for the office.
I always wear my Hobbs NW3 aeroplane charm necklace to which I have attached my ‘E’ Fendi charm. I like necklaces that are slightly longer and that you can layer shorter ones with, like my new skull chain from Ooh La Lara.
My husband bought me two beautiful charm bracelets after Lila was born with the kids initials and dates of birth on them, from one of my favourite designers, Jessica De Lotz. I am also lusting after her red apple necklace and a Phoebe Coleman heart necklace.
I love rings and wear my nugget ring from Monica Vinader most days, but also love brands like Freedom at Topshop and Zara for costume pieces. Stella & Dot also have amazing necklaces, I have just got one of their fab pieces which I wear a lot.
With handbags I tend to have a favourite which I’ll use for ages. My off-duty style until recently was a lime green leather throw-over one from ASOS White a couple of years ago, that I’ve worn to death and only just put away. I have just discovered an amazing new British heritage brand called Village England (seriously, check them out!) and have two of their bags on rotation – an across the body style in orange called Cranleigh and a gorgeous, putty grey one called Newlyn which I use for work.
I am regretting selling my navy Anya Hindmarch bag on eBay during my maternity leave with Charlie! I used that every day for work. My work bag at the moment is a large red ‘Lawrence’ bag from Jaeger – love it. I’m trying to move away from the oversized bag I’ve been using for ages and be a bit more streamlined! I would really love a silver satchel type bag I have seen for Spring/Summer 2014 in Marni, but frankly that will never happen!
My evening style is just a more made-up version of my smarter work looks. With probably a few more sequins. With two small children I don’t go out as much and am actually a bit of a home bird so I love meals in or at friends’ houses, which means I don’t need to dress up! My off-duty look is very casual. My evening bags chop and change – I never splash out on them and the high street do great pieces. Zara and Topshop are particularly brilliant.
I love make up! My skincare must-haves (currently) are Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion for day and for night I swear by the Olay Regenerist cleansing brush, Eve Lom TLC Cream and Eve Lom’s Age Defying Smoothing capsules. I also have L’Occitane dry skin hand cream and Dr Lewinn’s Renunail by my bed.
My every day make up must-haves are Soap & Glory’s Glow Job (like a brightening primer), Bobbi Brown’s Luminous Moisturising Treatment Foundation, Illamasqua brightening concealer, Bobbi Brown Cheek Tint in nude beach and Rimmel’s Lash Accelerator mascara in black. Anything that will make me look like I haven’t been disturbed by the kids or woken up at 6am! I also love lipsticks, so chop and channge between a full-on red like Lipstick Queen’s Red Sinner or Nars satin lip pencil in Golshan to a colour lip tint like Bobbi Brown. I am never without around 3 lipbalms at any one time either – current favourites are by L’Occitane and Soap & Glory.
I never like spending loads of money on the kids clothes as they grow out of them SO QUICKLY. Massive cliche but so true. Slightly more expensive brands I occasionally dip into include Mamas & Papas – I’m loving what they are doing at the moment (they have a new creative director). I have recently bought some fab cardigans for Lila in beautiful, bright shades with quirky details.
I also love Mini Boden for their prints and for their amazing bodysuit/vests which wash brilliantly! They also do the best coloured skinny jeans for boys. I love brights, so Charlie does quite often look as though he’s a CBeebies presenter in bold, primary shades!
H&M are also amazing for boys – they do fab chino trousers in bright colours for £9.99. I recently bought Charlie a grey sweatshirt from H&M, some fab turquoise and red Hurrell trainers and turquoise tracksuit bottoms from H&M.
For Lila I have bought heaps from Zara as she has just grown out of everything in that 18-24months category! I have just bought her a Breton knit with heart motif, lemon print trousers and a pair of heart print Velcro trainers from Clarks.
I LOVE interiors and am always looking for the next project! If I wasnt a fashion editor, I’d love to have been an interior designer. We’re going to be doing up our very tatty bathroom, so I have just bought some printed tiles for the floor and am scouring the web looking for the fixtures and fittings. I’m also planning to switch the kids rooms around, so Charlie will have the slightly bigger spare room – I know exactly what I want from making boards on Pinterest, so just need to save up and actually do it!! I think TK Maxx do amazing things for homes, all my lamps come from there. I also love a website called This Modern Life, which basically has everything I want for the kids rooms on it!!
