Nine times out of ten my daily outfit consists of jeans (by Frame or Mother) or alternatively, a leather skirt teamed with a knit – normally cashmere – and flat shoes. At the moment I’m alternating between my Aquazzura lace up flats or Stan Smiths. If I don’t have meetings then it’s often trainers but always flats. When it’s warmer I tend to favour a tee from Cos or Me & Em, or a silk blouse or maybe a Breton and a leather jacket from Whistles, Baujken or Gerard Darel. I wear a lot more skirts in the spring and summer – leather, silk, cotton – anything goes actually. This season I’m treating myself to a suede biker – All Saints are well stocked. My current bag is a Givenchy Antigona in black and a YSL cross body by night. I have a Pierre Hardy pouch from Matches that’s great for a Saturday lunch. A bucket bag – possibly tasselled – is on my list for spring/summer…
Why it works…
This look works for me on several levels: my days start with getting my children up and walking them to nursery before I walk to the office, so anything too dressy would be a chore. The Sheer Luxe office is pretty laid back. We’re a relaxed, friendly publication and not about fierce fashion as that’s not us and that’s not what our readers want. The meetings I have are with brands or suppliers in the industry so they’re never that formal anyway – flats, a jacket and well fitting jeans is rarely not smart enough.
I am a big fan of Frame jeans and I love Mother – they have less stretch but fit me really well. Most of my jeans have a rip or three – my mother does not get it! I always have my jeans altered – at least once per pair because it’s so important they fit you well and their shape changes as you wear them. Colour wise it’s grey, black or blue denim – white if they’re not too tight in the summer and I’ve just bought a great camo pair at Donna Ida.
Silk shirts, jersey Ts and cashmere – that is 80% of my top wardrobe. For silk shirts – Equipment of course, Ts from Cos, American Vintage, Me & Em and cashmere from Vince, Chinti & Parker or J Crew although they have changed the composition of their cashmere V which I am very miffed about!
I always buy a new winter coat and for Spring tend to live in leather jackets because they’re warmer than say a silk bomber (although partial to these too) plus they’re never not appropriate. Baujken are doing a fab teal coloured leather jacket this season that I have my eye on. And suede is top of the list this spring/summer.
Flats by day – always – Tabitha Simmons, pretty ballerinas do a great pointy toe for less or a Chloe Scalloped Ballet flat. Heel wise I am mad about Gianvitto Rossi – the cost per wear of my shoe boots is VERY reasonable.
How does your look change from day to evening?
It doesn’t hugely – a Tom Ford matt lip and a pair of Gianvitto Rossi or Aquazurras. I might put on a leather skirt or leather trousers but very little else changes. I’m much more get ready for the day first thing and then it’s quick and easy to adapt my look. I often go straight out from work and just change my shoes and bag.
I recently discovered Jenny Harding’s Dynasty Clinic and I haven’t looked back since. She has pretty much cured my eczema and banned me from using anything but her cleaner and moisturizer. She is quite a character (you name it and it’s pink) but a real industry secret.
YSL touche eclat, Laura Mercier Illuminising Tinted Moisturiser, YSL babydoll mascara, Nars Laguna Bronzer, black eye liner and Bobbi Brown Bright Pink lipgloss.
SHOPPING FOR CHILDREN
I have one of each and love Zara for both of them. As girls get older you have to be a bit more careful but there’s still some great stuff. I don’t buy my son’s trousers anywhere else – they’re a skinny leg which I much prefer on boys.
I shop all over the place for my home. I keep thinking I’m done and then I appear with another new accessory – my husband just rolls his eyes. Occa Home, Made.com, Casafina and Lizard Orchid are all favourites. I last bought a beautiful rose pink blown glass bowl from Lizard Orchid and a Tom Dixon diffuser – worth every penny.
