One of the best things about shopping is discovering an independent boutique stocked to the brim with off-the-radar labels and beautiful clothes that you can’t find anywhere else. Austique, founded in 2004, is one such place. Specialising in contemporary, feminine and above all gorgeous clothes from designers such as Goldsign, Parker and Sydney Evan, Austique is just the place to go if you’re looking for something just a little bit different that you won’t spot on every second person as you walk down the street. Now with three London stores (Chelsea, Marylebone and Notting Hill), its gorgeous own-label designs and a full online boutique, Austique was founded by the very stylish Katie Canvin and her sister Lindy. Katie, who lives in London with her husband and two children, Connie, 4, and Sam, 3 months, is the perfect advertisment for the store, with her chic, yet approachable style and exquisite eye for design. Here she tells us all about the wardrobe essentials that take her from home to office to school and boutique….
I wear jeans every day and have an embarrassing amount (maybe 20…), although I go through phases of wearing only about 3 or 4 for a while. Then I wear either a t-shirt, a shirt and flat shoes, sadly I can only wear practical shoes during the day! My bag is by Proenza Schouler, which looks smart without being too much and most importantly my laptop fits! Jewellery wise, I love pieces by Sydney Evan, which are made of precious metals and stones but are casual enough so don’t look out of place on the school run. I’ve also been wearing a lot of Austique cashmere, which is light enough to wear on a cool summer’s evening.
I only wear two labels, Goldsign and J Brand, although 90% of the time I’m in Goldsign – once you’ve worn them you never want to wear anything else. The denim is so soft and they wear really well. The fit is great on pretty much everyone I have come across and they tick all the boxes in terms of style. At the moment I’m rotating my Vikki Boyfriend Jean and my skinny Virtual Ocean jean.
I wear short-sleeves, long-sleeves, pattern and plain! My tees this season are from Monrow, which are made from the softest fabric. I love the neon pink right now. I also have a beautiful Austique floral shirt, which I’m living in at the moment. I also love my MiH Tails Shirt in Bandana Print and Kain tees, which are great for every day but also have a luxurious feel.
I love my Tibi jacket which is a few seasons old but I wear again and again. I also have a great MiH jacket. This season if I could have any jacket it would be the Alice + Olivia Kidman jacket in neon which is amazing!
Plimsolls are a must for the school run, while Lanvin pumps are my favourite when I need to look at little smarter. For nighttime I love really high heels so often go for Louboutin.
I’m definitely at the age where I want one piece of jewellery per season rather than lots of different styles like the girls in the office. I have a favourite charm bracelet which I wear everyday and a new eternity ring which I was given for Sam, which I love. We have some great new brands at Austique this season such as Mo by Monica and La Mome Bijoux which I’ll be mixing in with my favourite pieces.
I am coveting…
I love Zara, Gap and if money were no object Bonpoint and Marie Chantal for my children. I also think Bonnie Baby and Trotters do very sweet things, while The Little White Company is always great for sleepwear. I just bought my daughter Connie a beautiful bridesmaid dress from Marie Chantal (in the sale luckily!) and some gold bow shoes to match. Sam is growing so quickly he always seems to need new things all the time. I recently bought him a pair of Polar Bear pyjamas from The Little White Company which are so soft and light whilst totally adorable – I love that I can dress him however I like and he doesn’t care yet! They’ll be perfect when it’s hot. Seed is a clothes shop for women and children in Australia and their children’s things are amazing. I often buy cool bits and pieces from there for Connie. It’s worth the shipping costs as everything is really unusual and unique
My taste varies from wildly expensive to extremely cheap so takes in everything from Zara Home to Designers Guild to William Yeoward. I just bought some new camellias from The Chelsea Gardener which are beautiful, although we use our local florist John & Jesse for flowers quite a lot. I LOVE Diptyque candles which are perfect.
