Would you do the ‘ugly’ shoe?

Eleven years ago I gave up my job and took six months off to travel around Central America on my own. No-one else had that amount of time to spare and so off I trotted to Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize solo, just me, my backpack and my trusty pair of white Birkenstocks. I loved those sandals. So comfy! So easy to wear! So perfect for travelling in the back of dusty buses, climbing up volcanoes (albeit easy ones), attempting to look like a surfer in Costa Rica and hiding from nutty hippies on idyllic Panamanian islands (but that’s a whole different story..). And then I lost one. In a swampy bit of mud on an island off the coast of Honduras. I’d like to say it was during some amazing jungle trek, but nope I was just a bit pissed. I did of course, have other shoes. I didn’t spend the rest of my trip barefoot (or in fact get dreadlocks, this wasn’t some kind of ‘find yourself’ gap yah). Arriving back to London extremely tanned and – actually I think I might have been barefoot (at Heathrow – OH GOD), the Birkenstock thing had kind…

Style File: designer Amy La Paire

I first discovered Amy La Paire’s gorgeous sandals last year. Her beautiful boutique brand La Paire specialises in the kind of super-stylish sandals that make you feet look so gorgeous, you just want to kick up your heels and dance. Handmade in Spain and fashioned from the finest leather in beautiful vibrant shades, the sandals have been joined this season by some killer flats, making La Paire a brand you can wear all year-round. Inspired by “anywhere and anything, from a colour to an interesting pattern to doors, a building or a place” Amy not only has a great eye for design, but also a covetable and accessible wardrobe. Here she tells us all about it……

But nobody would say no to a little token of appreciation, surely? Here’s a little round-up of the best presents out there (although a homemade card totally works for us, btw.)…

Feeling wild?

Leopard-print has become a bit of a modern-day classic. While a full-on coat works for some, it can make others feel just a little too-Bet Lynch. But, leopard-print shoes? Well, they good look on everybody. I tried this pair of asymmetric suede courts on a week or so ago and have been thinking about them every since. They’re a great height for occasional heel-wearers, a brilliant fit and would look fab teemed with a pair of rolled-up boyfriend jeans or black tights and a black dress. Rather wonderfully, they are now on sale for a bargain-tastic £20 from M&S. If however, you prefer your heel a little higher and your toe a little pointier, then there’s this other pair (also from M&S – I’m a big fan of their shoes) for £99. Go wild…  …
