Unsexy dressing

I’m not sure whether it’s my age, my lifestyle or simply the fact that I’m digging the ‘puritan’ look at the moment, but there’s something about buttoned-up dressing that really appeals to me. Fashion mavens such as Laura Bailey and Martha Ward are queens of this slightly eclectic, slightly prim look which does little in the way of flashing the flesh and a lot in the way of looking supremely stylish. Of course, my preference for covering myself up could have a lot to do with the fact that a) I’m currently suffering from a summer cold (two words that should never be seen together) and b) up until yesterday, it’s been freezing. Perhaps when the sun’s out properly, I’ll throw modesty to the wind and get all my limbs out, but until then, this dress is what I’m going to be wearing…

Dress, £55, & Other Stories

I have to give you a word of warning. This & Other Stories dress has absolutely zero hanger appeal. It also looks pretty ropey in a photo. But, trust me. In ‘real life’ it’s fab. The beautiful print is the colour of a summer sky and the length (on 5’4′ me) is perfectly ankle-skimming. I also love the drawstring waist, rolled up sleeves and buttoned up top. I first spied it on the brilliant blog The Edited and having bought it I can confirm that it really is the perfect summer dress, if you, like me, are also having a rather puritanical moment. Anyone else, can simply pull on a pair of denim cut-offs and work on that tan (which is also a pretty nice option)….

I’m 5 4ish too. Did you get the size 36? I’m very tempted by that, and the black pom pom one.

      Hi Lucy,
I did. The 38 was massive and it’s quite a roomy dress. The black pom pom dress was lovely (and it comes in white), but for some reason it just didn’t suit me! So gutted as I’ve seen pics of Laura Fantacci (WIT blog) wearing it and she looks fab.

      Hi Lucy,
Natasha here – I’m 5 ft 3 and have bought the pom pom dress in black (in size 34 – the 36 was too big in the shoulder area). I love it BUT I think I might get it taken up a teeny bit as it’s more low calf than mid calf on me and I am a dedicated wearer of flats…
