Allegedly, it is summer. The weather has other ideas. What on earth is a girl to wear? We have some ideas (and some sales bargains).Last weekend, I would have agreed with the season: it was delightfully warm and we drank champagne in the garden as the darkness fell. (We were at a wedding, I hasten to add. This isn’t standard weekend fare.) This week, not so much… It’s not cold, exactly, but it’s not warm. It’s wet (very, very wet on occasion). Every morning I stood in front of my wardrobe, utterly baffled. Here are the hero pieces which are carrying me through this difficult meteorological time.
A denim jacket
This time of year, a trench feels too autumnal (even if it is weather-appropriate) and too warm (it’s been remarkably humid in London). Blazers are very right now, but I tend to feel too boxy and formal in them. So my new fling (on) is a denim jacket. Great over a simple white or grey tee and print trousers and it instantly toughens up a pretty dress. I have two – both Gap – a classic darker denim one, and a pale, cropped version (rather like this). This one [above] is reduced to a miniscule £14.99 at Mango, and check out this classic – just £19.99 in the Zara sale. also love how fresh this one looks (£98, The White Company).
What’s not to love about a dress? One piece and you’re dressed. The joy. Like this one from Boden [above, £69.50 although with 30% off at time of writing]. This one by Frame Denim at matchesfashion takes minimalism to new levels – and would definitely do double-time for work and play (great with tan sandals if it ever warms up again) – or for something on the cheaper end of the scale, try this from H&M. If it’s print you’re after, check out this midi shirt dress with 60% off at La Redoute (now £18), from whence I also love this (now £24.50) flared skirt blue number.
Or a floral midi (or longer)…
Preferably one with sleeves. Because, you know…that oft-intemperate, unpredictable weather and it means you can wear it for work (and then – can you guess? – fling your denim jacket over it on the weekend. Can you spot the pattern emerging?). Warehouse is becoming something of a treasure trove for amazing pieces – like this Oriental-style midi dress for £25 (was £59 – I *might* have just ordered it) and this silk bird-print beauty (£70, was £95). Another sales bargain is this from Mango (£19.99). I love the ruffled wrist detail.
If full-length is more your thing, this – now on sale at Zara for £25.99 is a treat.
Mine are from Uniqlo. I have this men’s crew neck in pale grey (predictably) and pink. Light enough to carry around, to be shrugged on should the weather turn (also great for summer evening’s when it’s warm enough to sit outside but not quite jumper-free-weather). Smart with trousers for work; great with jeans (or denim cut-offs) when off-duty. Size up and opt for a neutral so it you can grab it and go – this linen crew neck (£49.50) from Hush would do the job nicely.
When one of the girls from work recently had to pop to New York to interview a celeb (as you do), she very kindly made a pilgrimage to JCrew for me – and brought back this (£88). I don’t know what I did without a twist-on-the-classic white shirt in my wardrobe. I wear it with jeans, a skirt, the works. It’s indispensable for ‘what do I wear?’ days and always looks crisp and smart. This tie-cuff H&M number is more instant gratification at a fraction of the price.
