White jeans. They’re pretty marmite, eh? Some people – the male cast of Love Island, frequenters of the Fulham Road, Liz Hurley – love them, whilst others would quite possibly wear nothing rather than slip a leg into a pair. But, stop right there, because white jeans can be cool (yes, you heard that right), it just depends on the cut and how you style them. They’re also not just for summer AND they all seem to be on sale at the moment. So, if you’re a White Jeans Doubter, it could be time to do a rethink…..
When it comes to white jeans it’s ALL about the fit. You just can’t get away with a bad pair (which doesn’t mean they have to be expensive, they just need to be right for you). One of the secrets with white is to not make them too tight, the consensus being that a looser or more distressed fit looks much less TOWIE/MIC than a pair you’ve shoehorned your thighs into. If you are going to go for fitted, then please don’t go too skintight, although obvs. do what you like, one woman’s sushi is another woman’s baked beans, but trust me skintight just feels wrong. Fitted is more acceptable, and a fitted crop even better as a flash of ankle seems to soften the effect. Witness French Voguette Emmanuelle Alt (below) and you can see how un-ITV2/SW3 they look. Doesn’t the oversized denim shirt look FAB? If you love this look, then try these from H&M, which are fitted, but not too tight.
Exhibit 2 is Leandra Medine aka ManRepeller, another high priestess of style. In this pic, it’s the accessories and the looser cut that make the white jeans work. Her arm candy and flat sandals toughen this look up a bit, making a pale-coloured ensemble more ‘city’ and less ‘wafty’. These jeans are more of a loose ‘boyfriend’ cut and would look equally good with a navy jumper or dark top, and moving into autumn, rolled up with boots. These from The White Company (as pictured on Natasha at the top and me below) and these from H&M are really good versions. And whilst I haven’t tried these on, I am a fan of Gap’s denim, so this distressed pair is definitely worth a try and buy.
This summer’s hit has been the white denim culotte, as seen on Alex Stedman (The Frugality) below. I am a big fan of this style, which is surprisingly wearable day or night. I can highly recommend H&M’s version (pictured below) – the high waist leaves you feeling nicely tucked in and the frayed crop gives them a little edge. I love how they’ve styled them with the white jumper. Or there’s this lovely pair from Me+Em (which I’m wearing in the top pic), which are really comfortable and flattering, and down to £39 (from £129) in the sale.
Finally, remember that white jeans are not just for summer! They actually look really great in autumn/winter adding a much-needed spark of brightness on a grey day. Roll them up and tuck them into those Acne style boots that everyone was wearing years ago and off you go!
