With Strictly back on TV and the nights drawing in, late September heralds the start of party season. While summer is all about long, light evenings, low-key beauty and laid-back dressing, autumn/winter is when you can up things a notch with a little more eyeliner, perhaps a red lip (don’t you love how fashion people say ‘lip’ rather than ‘lips’?) and a fabulous outfit. Going out is just that more fun after dark, isn’t it?
I don’t think I’m the only person who is slightly obsessed with Claudia Winkleman’s style. She is such a woman’s woman – funny, clever and not overtly sexy, she dresses how I’d love to dress and has a fringe that I’m constantly lusting after. Whilst I’m not quite brave enough for the fringe (Could I? Should I?!) I can try and emulate her dressed up ‘look’, particularly the one she sported for the Strictly launch show. Hair in a low chignon and a very cool trouser suit worn with heels. Complete Wow factor. I think we ALL should try it…..But, don’t worry if you don’t want to go the whole Winkleman Hog. Just take an element – a black blazer, perhaps even a black velvet blazer and team it with a pair of jeans and heels (these teal velvet ones are nice). Throw in a clutch and some statement earrings and you’ll look as fabulous as Claudia (at least that’s what I’m telling myself)…
A skirt with a knit and heels is a very modern way to do party glamour. And, a clever one too. All these pieces can be worn separately – day or night, so they work hard for their ‘spend’. Pleated skirts are a trend this season, although they’re also a classic – confusing isn’t it? What it really means is that you’ll look fashionable wearing one this year, but it’s also not going to date, meaning you can wear it again and again over years to come. I have the olive green version of this pleated skirt, but the burgundy is also rather lovely. Ticking two boxes, this animal print pleated skirt is another one to add to your lust list. Or try this red and pink colour block skirt, which would look amazing with a red knit. Add if you like sparkle (who doesn’t?!) then this navy sparkly skirt is a must for winter…
I love a jumpsuit. Even though they’ve been in style for the last few years, there’s still something very modern about them. As smart as a dress, but not something that everyone else will be wearing, they’re a great option if you like easy, one-step dressing. This strappy navy one would look amazing now with the black velvet blazer I mentioned above (very Stella McCartney), and just as great in the summer on its own.
