Indian Summer aside, it is the first week of September, which officially marks the start of the school year. Whether you know someone heading to school this week or are even going to school (perhaps college or night school? Maybe you’re a teacher?) yourself, this time of year always has a Back to School feel about it. It’s time to embrace new things, knuckle down and gear up for autumn. Here’s the way we’ll be doing it….

New stationery

We’ll take any excuse for new stationery such is our love of all things paper…

It may have more of a spring feel with it's beautiful blossom design, but this journal with a silk-screen printed cover is perfect for jotting down notes and dreams. £19.99, Blue Buds.

New (school) year, New You?

Creative writing, art, a language….these are just some of the classes I’d sign up for if I had the time (or wasn’t so darn lazy). If you want to learn something new and challenge your brain, then sign up for an evening or weekend class. Check with your local council/evening school for what’s on offer or head down the specialised route by signing up with organisations such as the National Piping Centre in Glasgow (to learn the bagpipes) of The Faber Academy in Bath, London and online (novel writing with teachers including Esther Freud and Tim Lott from Faber & Faber).

While most classes (in everything from cheese making to vintage scent history and handwriting) are based in London, the Darling Collective also arranges events outside the capital including creative writing holidays in Portugal, furniture painting and restoration courses in Devon and foraging in Dorset.

If learning from home is easier, then there’s a host of online courses available through the likes of the BBC, TED (which hosts free online talks and lectures in all manner of subjects from around the world) and The Amazings (video classes in everything from making embroidered necklaces to making natural beauty products).

New shoes

Going back to school always meant a new pair of shoes. Why should this September be any different?
