Katie Starmer-Smith (pictured here, looking chic whilst pregnant – no mean feat) is the founder of Atterley Road, a wonderful online store which pulls together the best independent and high-end high-street brands into one beautifully-edited package. A former buyer for Jigsaw, Katie wanted to create an online version of the perfect shopping street, where you could find gorgeous pieces from the likes of Whistles, Hobbs and 7 for All Mankind, alongside niche labels such as Second Female, Splendid and By Malene Birger. Needless to say, Katie’s own wardrobe is equally covetable, mixing big names with clever finds from small in-the-know brands. Based in London, where she lives with her husband Charlie, 14-week old son Jack and dog Milly, Katie gives us the lowdown on her daily look…
Skinny black Paris jean, £143, MiH Jeans; Coloured Parisienne jean, £108, Maison Scotch, Marrakesh jean, £154, MiH Jeans
“My staple uniform always includes a pair of jeans, which at the moment are my cropped MiH black Paris pair. I’ve tried so many jeans over the years, but for me, MiH has the best fit and quality. They keep their shape and colour and are just so comfortable. Jeans really are so versatile, you can easily dress them up with some stilettos or chuck on a pair of old converse for a more relaxed look. I’m quite good at recycling my old clothes but I still seem to have 15 pairs (don’t tell my husband!)
I’ve just had a baby and whilst pregnant I lived in my skinny black J brand Mama jeans. I also have a boyfriend jean, skinny black longer leg jeans, and the MiH Marrakesh for when I want to make my legs look longer. I’ve also just bought a Maison Scotch pastel coloured jean for the summer. I like cropped jeans as I think it’s quite flattering to show a bit of ankle.
Galathee Breton top, £53, Saint James; One pocket shirt, £145, Levi’s Made & Crafted
I love a great white shirt as they’re just so effortless and chic. There are four white shirts in my wardrobe, an oversized one, which I lived in during pregnancy, a shorter boxy style one, a silk one and a cotton Isabel Marant one that I love. I do like Levi’s Made & Crafted shirts as they use lovely fabric. However, my back option is stripes, I have ten Breton tops! Saint James, is a great little French brand which makes the best Bretons. They have fitted ones with three-quarter length sleeves, ones with long sleeves and a great oversized one for that off duty look.
I’m loving schoolboy chic at the moment so my husband’s Uniqlo merino sweaters are something of a favourite of mine. They’re just the perfect little crew sweater, I wish they did them in more colours but my staples are navy and grey marl.
Cotton v-neck sweater £19.90, Uniqlo
As it’s been so cold, I’ve been making a lot of use of my classic Maison Scotch camel coat. I like to update my coat collection each year with a trend piece, but I do have a classic black Jigsaw coat that has seen me through the years. My Maison Scotch coat has quite a masculine shape, but still manages to look quite feminine at the same time. It’s also the perfect shade of camel, to warm up the dreary winter. For summer, I have my eye on our tweed IRO jacket. It’s the perfect weight and is an affordable take on a Chanel classic.
Lizzie jacket, £295, IRO
Praia sandals, £80, La Paire; Cassini mid heel, £125, Whistles
When it comes to shoes, I’m a flats kinda gal, so I’ve been living in my Russell & Bromley black patent loafers. Although, I normally have my Whistles stilettos in my bag. I tend to wear heels for meetings, although this job requires a great deal of running from appointment to appointment so my loafers are getting a lot more use at present! I have quite a big collection of shoes including five pairs of Converse – my weekend shoe! There’s also a couple of pairs of loafers, lots of ankle boots and a vast selection of black heels! I’m lusting over a pair of Whistles silver stilettos at the moment. I’m in love with one of our new brands called La Paire, which makes gorgeous summer sandals in an array of colours. We’ve also just started stocking Just Ballerina, great flats with a built in small wedge so they are not too flat. They come in fab hot neons for the summer.
Marcie satchel, £705, Chloe; Capri clutch, £99, Lamb
My husband bought me my Chloe Marcie bag after the birth of our son. I have to thank the midwife for this – she said you always start off labour promised a Primark handbag, but after a few hiccups, by the time Jack was born we were on to Chloe! I love everything about it. It’s elegant and sophisticated, and completes any outfit. It’s the perfect size for day to day use and can fit my ipad in too. I also have a vintage Chanel evening bag for nights out and a gold clutch from Lamb, which is the perfect size for a night out and instantly adds a touch of ‘chic’.
Gold initial necklace, £90, Sarah Chloe; Anna necklace, £79, John and Pearl
I was recently given a gorgeous gold ‘J’ necklace by Sarah Chloe for Mothers’ Day, which I haven’t taken off since. For nights out I love a bit of costume jewellery by the likes of Nocturne or John and Pearl, large diamantes are a favourite. I have also always loved collecting odd pieces from vintage fairs and markets, mixing and matching. And, I have had my eye on the Hermes Medor watch for years now! One day…
Isabel Marant is my favourite designer. I love her style as she always manages to look so effortlessly cool. I’m also very keen on Scandinavian brands at the moment, Filippa K has always been a favourite of mine because of the simple styles with a feminine touch. We have lots of Scandinavian brands coming on board at Atterley Road including Julie Brandt who is a UK exclusive to us – my favourite piece of hers is the Coriander dress – despite loathing coriander!
