Style File: Molly Gunn, Founder of

MOLLY GUNNStyle journalist Molly Gunn has written for about every major publication in the UK – if you’ve read it, she’s probably written for it. Once a dedicated urbanite, Molly now lives in Iden, a village near Rye in East Sussex with her husband Tom and sons Rafferty (3) and Max (7 months). Becoming a mother gave Molly the impetus to found Selfish Mother, a brilliant blogzine aimed at women who have kids but don’t feel in the least bit ‘mumsy’ – a word that makes me shudder just thinking about it. “It feels like there is a new mood in motherhood, where imperfect is the new perfect,” says Molly. “Selfish Mother is a place where women can hang out and read articles by inspirational writers who are experiencing the same life, work  and family issues as them.”

In the winter my daily uniform consists of jeans teamed with colourful knits or bold sweatshirts by Millionhands (my husband’s brand) and Nike Air Max trainers.

I tend to veer towards skinny high-waisted blue jeans, printed jeans and black jeans by Topshop or Whistles, while I love knits by Ganni, Whistles and J.Crew. In the spring, my tops will change to blouses and tops by Whistles and T-shirts by Millionhands.

Going outside I’ll wear my red duffle coat by YMC x Gloverall or my faux-fur jacket by Calvin Klein and a bobble-hat by Anthropologie. Because I work from home and live in the countryside it means I can dress down in comfort and get away without dressing up.

I don’t own loads of shoes, I’m a creature of habit…

In the winter I only wear trainers by Nike and in the summer I only wear Birkenstocks. Oh and bottle green Wellington Boots as I live in the country and often go on walks or to the beach.

I don’t wear much jewellery as I have a baby who is very grabby! Saying that, I do have a bold gold link chain that’s vintage that I wear a lot. I used to work in fashion, so I have some bits from those days that I wear on the odd occasion I add jewellery to my look – such as a ‘bunny necklace’ and a ‘M’ pendant from EC One and some gold hoop earrings by Philippa Holland.

I have two bags I alternate, a black cross body bag by See by Chloe, which is super handy for every day, and an electric blue Marc by Marc Jacobs’ Hobo. When it comes to the evening, I have a lovely black cashmere clutch by Anya Hindmarch and a black leather clutch by Carolina Herrera (both gifts from fashion writing days).

If I’m going out I’ll add a nice top perhaps a vintage black lace one, and a pair of Clarks Desert Wedge boots. These are miracle shoes that I can walk and dance in. Other more expensive and inappropriate shoes have come and gone, and nothing comes close to these for me. In the summer I’ll maybe wear a dress. I have a gorgeous bright red backless shift and a grey silk shirt dress, both by Whistles, that I love.

I love the calming Soothing Facial Oil by Aromatherapy Associates. I also use Aveda’s Foaming Cleanser and Nivea’s Vital Multi Active Anti-age Day care Soy as it has SPF in it!

My every day make-up must haves are lipstick no 110 (a red/orange colour) by Kate Moss for Rimmel London, mascara by MAC and eyeliner by YSL.

Striped top, £16, Polarn O. Pyret; striped baby leggings, £16, Polarn O. Pyret

I absolutely LOVE Polarn O.Pyret. I’m totally addicted to the brand, especially the cute stripy tops and leggings. I also love a shop in Rye called Wobbly Wardrobe, which has a great selection of cool clothes for kids.

The last three things I bought for my children were…

Mocc-Ons – slippers for my baby Max. I like that they stay on his feet.

Striped Hatley pyjamas for Rafferty. Super soft, cool stripes.

A fairisle jumper for Rafferty from Gap. It’s a great winter knit.
