Style File: shoe designer Lucy Choi

ANT_9465As the niece of Jimmy Choo, you can safely say that Lucy Choi has shoes in the blood. A London-based designer who opened her first standalone store last year, she is renowned for her beautiful, hand-crafted pieces that manage to combine style, comfort and glamour. As the woman behind some of the best-dressed feet in London, we bet her wardrobe is pretty darn special too….

What clothes do you find yourself veering towards every day?

My go to look is a silk shirt with skinny black leather trousers, and I love my black fur gilet and cosy parker for extra warmth in the winter! I like that I can dress up my outfits with some heels or pair it with flatter boots depending on my schedule – and always Lucy Choi London shoes of course! I love to wear black, but I always add that wow factor by layering different textures and fabrics – leather with silk, lace and jersey, and hints of bold colours and patterns on my shoes, which stand out and make my outfits that extra bit special. My favourite brands have to be Stella McCartney, Rag & Bone and Philip Lim.

Why does this ‘uniform’ work for you?

I would say that my personal style is quite smart during the working week so that I’m always ready for meetings. My ethos for my brand is focused on the 3 C’s – character, comfort and craftsmanship – which I like to apply to my work uniform. I tend to be more relaxed over the weekend, because I have a young son, so enjoy being more casual when I’m spending time with him and my husband.

Is denim one of your wardrobe staples?

I have so many pairs of jeans, so many in fact that I could almost start up a jean brand as well as a shoe brand!  My favourites are Current Elliot, Rag & Bone and J Brand. I tend to wear plain black or grey jeans, and I love wearing leather black leggings, so that I can be more playful with my shoes.

What kind of tops do you wear?

My favourite designers are Alice Temperley, Alexander Wang, Philip Lim and Collette Dinnigan. However I also enjoy discovering new designers and have several pieces from a talented young designer – Vielma London. My favourite kinds of tops play with fabrics and layering, so I love to wear see through tops with camisoles underneath.

Do you have a favourite a/w coat that you wear every season or do you buy a new one each season?

My Sofia Kokosalaki coat is one of my favourite pieces in my wardrobe.  It goes with everything from jeans to black tie.  I could not live without it! I also have a coat that combines soft black leather with patent leather and sheepskin. It is all black but combines so many different textures – I love it! I like to be different and stand out, so I believe in buying investment pieces rather than a new coat every season.

Do you wear flats or heels during the day?

Day to day, I am very much a heels girl. I love how confident I feel when I am wearing them, and they definitely have the wow factor. Flats with a little heel are great for running around town, and are healthier for your feet and posture, but I think heels are much more empowering for women, particularly for work or the evening.

Do you have any favourite pieces from your current collection?

To mark our boutique opening we created a special edition shoe called the “Dormer”. I feel the shoe epitomizes my personal sense of style, because it’s sexy, playful, and fun all at the same time I love the drama of mixing the colourful snake print leathers with black and white chevron detailing. It’s a showstopper shoe and goes with so many different outfits.

Do you have a favourite day bag?

I love a classic black tote bag as it goes with everything, is practical and looks chic. Day to day, I like to have my Louis Vuitton with me to carry all my bits and bobs.

How does your style change from day to evening?

I really enjoy going out for dinner and catching up with friends, but due to my hectic schedule I rarely have enough time to get changed in between day to evening. It’s therefore so important that I have a pair of shoes that will last me from day to night. However, I do  love to dress up on special occasions. I have a stunning Balmain dress I wore to the Lucy Choi London launch, which makes me feel amazing and looks fabulous paired with so many different pairs of shoes. Sometimes I wear heels that use colour to stand out, such as the Muse Burgundy, and other times I love wearing heeled boots that play with textures, such as the Roxy.

What evening bags do you have?

We recently introduced a selection of ultra glam clutch bags to the collection, so I’m really enjoying being able to mix and match the bags with my shoes. My favourite style at the moment has to be the Beaulieu in Black Glitter and Black pony hair. But I am so excited for the new styles, they use such vibrant and exotic materials, combining amazing snakeskins and pony hairs, which are perfect for both AW15 and SS16.

What are you skincare must-haves?

Every morning I use Chantecaille anti ageing serum, Vital Essence with Arbutin followed by Hourglass Veil primer. Skin Ceuticals has been incredible during my pregnancy. The eye cream and moisturizers are unparalleled for hydration. I discovered it when I went for a facial at Babington House, and know I won’t be able to find anything that could replace it!

What are your every day make-up must haves?

I try and wear minimal make up when I’m working, so my daily essentials are Hourglass Tinted Moisturiser and Laura Mercier Peach Glow lip gloss. For evenings, I love wearing Bobbi Brown – my go-to look at the moment is smoky eyes with a touch of sparkle and nude lips.
