I was chatting to someone the other day telling them how I was planning on giving up sugar, how I was in the middle of a ‘dry January’ and how I was doing all this healthy stuff in a bid to get my lagging energy back. She looked at me, raised an eyebrow and replied in a fabulous Texan drawl, “what you need is a holidaaaay….” And you know what. She’s right. Holidays really are the best medicine. If you, like me, have no long-haul trip to the sunshine planned (I wish), then a weekend away really is the next best thing. Which is why I’m desperate to go to this gorgeous-looking and amazingly affordable (we’re talking from under £100 a night) hotel….
The Porch House, Stow-on-the-Wold
Strictly it’s more of a pub-with-rooms than a boutique hotel, but my goodness, it’s lovely. Reputedly the oldest inn in England, it has thankfully undergone a refurb since it first opened in 947AD. These days it’s all wood beams, big beds and lovely fabrics. There are 13 rooms in total, all of which featuring nice little touches such as vintage radios and dressing tables fashioned from old Singer sewing machines. Downstairs is equally appealing with the pub offering comforting classics such as fish pie and rib-eye steaks with hand-cut chips. The dining room is a little smarter, but equally welcoming with a dinner menu that’s hard to say no to. It’s the perfect weekend getaway. From £99 a night.
